Why I Created Comfort Companion

There was a time in my life when things became pretty dark.

Life had brought me to a place of complete despair.

Eventually...

I realized I had a decision to make.

I could stay where I was...

or I could start trying to find my way out.

So I started studying.

I wanted to understand what was happening inside my own mind and body.

I studied neuroscience.

I learned about breathing techniques and meditation.

I learned how our thoughts can affect our bodies...

and how what happens in our bodies can affect our thoughts.

I began learning how to recognize when my thoughts were taking control...

how to calm the physical reactions happening inside me...

and how to respond differently to some of the things life was putting in front of me.

Little by little...

things began to change.

Not because life's problems went away.

And not because I suddenly had everything figured out.

I still struggle.

I still worry.

I still have disappointments.

I still have things happen in my life that I wish I could change...but can't.

I'm still learning.

But I've learned that those difficult moments don't always have to control what happens next.

I've learned when my mind starts taking me somewhere I don't want to go...

I can recognize it.

I've learned that sometimes calming my body first helps my mind settle down.

And I've learned that sometimes the thing I'm trying so hard to control...

was never mine to control in the first place.

I didn't learn these things because I wanted to create a website.

I learned them because I needed them.

And somewhere along the way...

I started thinking about other people going through their own difficult times.

Someone lying awake worrying about tomorrow.

Someone who's exhausted from holding everything together.

Someone who's grieving.

Someone who's lonely.

Someone who can't stop thinking about something that happened.

Or someone who just needs to hear another human voice for a little while.

I thought...

maybe something I've learned could help someone else too.

That's why I created Comfort Companion.

Why Comfort Companion Looks and Sounds the Way It Does

When you listen to one of my conversations, you'll notice there isn't a lot happening on the screen.

That's intentional.

You'll see a comfortable living room...

and an empty chair.

That chair is for you.

The little things you see around the room help tell the story of what you might be going through that night.

But once the conversation begins...

I don't want to keep giving your mind new things to watch.

I want you to be able to settle in...

listen...

and let everything slow down for a while.

That's also why you'll see just a little slow-moving smoke drifting over the image.

There's enough movement so the room doesn't feel completely still...

but not enough to demand your attention.

The background sound is there for much the same reason.

It's quiet.

It's not supposed to become the focus.

It's simply there to help create a comfortable place for us to sit together while we talk.

And when the conversation is over...

the sound continues for a while.

There's nothing else you need to do.

You can just rest.

A personal note from me

There's something else I want you to know.

The image of me you see throughout Comfort Companion was created with AI to resemble me.

The photograph you're looking at here is really me.

And the voice you hear in every Comfort Companion conversation...

is my real voice.

I think that's important to tell you.

The internet is becoming filled with people who appear to be real...

but aren't.

We're hearing AI-generated voices that sound completely human.

Sometimes it's becoming difficult to know what's real anymore.

I do use AI and other technology to help me create the Comfort Companion living room and some of the images you see.

But I never want you wondering whether the person talking to you is real.

I'm Dave.

The experiences I'm talking about are real.

The things I've struggled with are real.

And the things I'm sharing with you are things I've learned because I needed them in my own life.

I don't have all the answers.

I'm still dealing with life's struggles...

just like everybody else.

But I've been through some very difficult times.

And I've learned a few things that have helped me find my way through them.

So I thought I'd pull up another chair...

and share what I've learned with you.

And on those nights when things feel a little heavy...

I'll be here.
